Once the mailchimp plugin is activated I lose control of the menu options drop downs on the left and am unable to modify my widgets, neither active or inactive.

I've tested this on a basic install and can't reproduce an issue. Can you post the theme you are using and the other plugins you have activated so I can test those and see if we're conflicting with one of them?
