   I have been unable to find this problem resolved anywhere...

   Using twentyEleven theme. Main menu has both page and category links. using

   #access .current_page_item > a, #access .current_page_ancestor > a {
   color:#FFFF00;
   }

   I am able to style the current menu item if it is a page, but I can not find where to make the same happen if the menu link is a category link. Without this the menu is not consistent.

   Any ideas would be appreciated.

   You need to find out what class is on the category link and then modify the CSS accordingly. Can you provide a link to your site and point out which one is a category link?
