Support » Fixing WordPress » Unable to locate wordpress content directory

  • I have spent about a week trying to figure out why this is happening to me. I’ve found similar posts in the forum but none with solutions that could help me.

From this beginning (and I’m still new to webhosting and FTP so bare with me):

I installed WordPress through my host website, Dreamhost. I’ve been using the Dreamhost FTP client, but recently download FileZilla because I saw a tutorial about it and it’s easier to use and better.

When I try to change the theme of my blog, I keep getting the same message. I’ve downloaded the theme “blossom,” unzipped the folder, unnested the folders, found the main one titled “blossom” and put it in my wp-content/themes folder on filezilla. According to what people are saying, after doing this I should just magically have the theme “blossom” available to me in my wordpress admin under themes. But I don’t. When I go to “upload” and try to install the blossom.zip file, I am prompted to type in my host, username, and password info. After doing this I always receive the same message:

Unable to locate wordpress content directory.

I’ve tried changing my file permissions to 777, adding codes that people have said will work to my “wp-config.php” folder, and nothing works.

Please help I’m going to go completely insane from this.

If you put it in the themes folder in filezilla on your local computer, did you actually login to your account and move that to the themes folder on your account? Sounds like it may be on your computer, but you just haven’t transfered (FTPed) it to your live site.

If you are FTPing your theme using Filezilla, then you don’t need to upload the zip through the wp admin interface.

Thank you for the help. Unfortunately, I’m having a completely different problem now. I got rid of everything wordpress related that I had on my computer, after realizing that the reason I couldn’t upload the theme was that I did it in “easy mode” through my host, and it said I couldn’t change themes or plugins. So now I’m trying to download and manually install wordpress the hard way. I keep getting stuck when it’s time to run the script. I type the file where the contents should be located (the wp-admin/install.php thing), and I keep getting a 404 message saying the webpage cannot be found.

    Any thoughts??
