Unable to install WordPress locally (404 Not Found)

I’m not an Apple person, but I use XAMPP and just checked http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress_Locally_on_Your_Mac_With_MAMP#Step_3:_Starting_MAMP_Servers_.26_Creating_The_Database and see that you did not mention the step documented there that I know I have to do with XAMPP. Did you start MAMP?

Also, it may be a typo, but it is /install.php not /install/php

Using the default MAMP settings, you access your site with:

http://localhost:8888/ as you

I copied all wordpress files into the htdocs folder,

If you were to have put the files in a folder in htdocs, then it would be:

http://localhost:8888/folder_name

By default, MAMP uses port 8888 for the Apache web server so you have to append that to localhost using the full colon as noted above.

Can you access http://localhost/, or you get a 404 error there too?

In case you don’t get an error, are you sure you’re trying to access the folder where the WordPress files are in? If you put the files into htdocs/wordpress (or something like that) you need to access WordPress via http://localhost/wordpress.
