• A user posted this solution and it worked for me:

Set blog directory to 775, set WP_Content to 775, set uploads to 777. On Settings/Miscellaneous lose the / in front of wp-content/uploads AND click OFF organize by date AND track links

How safe is my blog directories then? I don’t know much about chmod but enough to know that
    775 – group can write
777 – all access is open.

    Thanks.

  • You are better off asking your web host’s support folks that question. Mine told me that 777 only creates a risk of access by other customers on the same server. But even then, there are some access restrictions.

All the directories you mention are 755 on my installations. And work fine.

But I did have similar problems, though not with WordPress, and it was because the software required php4 and would not work with php5. So, it may be worth checking if you are using php4 or php5.
