Unable to back up database after migration from Joomla

    Hi,

    I have 1.19.3 of the plugin on WP 3.6.1. I’m trying to import data from a Joomla 1.5.26. It’s not a huge number of posts (about 230), but many of them are quite lengthy.

    After a lot of server timeouts (not the plugin’s fault, obviously!) I managed to get all the articles and media imported. However, I’m now having trouble backing up the database.

    I have two backup utilities, which are both unable to back up the imported data. UpdraftPlus keeps timing out on the _posts table. The database backup feature in Better WP Security just goes to a white screen. If it were just one of these plugins, I would think it was a plugin conflict, but they both seem to be hanging on the imported posts data.

    To confirm that, I tried deleting all the imported content and running the backup again. This time there was no problem. I ran the import again, tried backing up — same problem.

    Any suggestions? I’m not sure what to do next. Obviously, I’m going to have a serious problem if I can no longer back up the database!

    I suggest you to use phpMyAdmin to export your database.
    If you want to do regular backups automatically, I suggest you the WordPress plugin BackWPup. It has got many options.

    But why would the imported database table cause backup errors at all? That’s the part I’m not getting. Is there a way to clean that up?

    Okay, I think I solved the problem. What it appears happened is that after importing, the database desperately needed to be optimized (particularly because the import failed once and I had to delete everything and start over). There was so much junk that optimizing reduced the size of that table by 64 MB.

    I would suggest that people make a point of optimizing their database after completing the import (and to definitely do that if they have this kind of a problem). For future releases, it might also be worth considering adding a feature to optimize the database from the plugin itself, especially for users who aren’t comfortable with phpMyAdmin. I don’t know how feasible that is, but it would be a nice addition.
