   I can't seem to get WP to update to the latest version in the update-core page. When I do so, it says Downloading update from http://wordpress.org/wordpress-3.0.3.zip... and hangs there. However, I could update Akismet via the same option with no problems. I get a feeling that this could be a server issue but need help to confirm.

   Try adding:AddType x-mapp-php5 .php to the top of your WordPress .htaccess file.

   This could be an issue with the server's memory.

   I had the same problem and I used WordPress Automatic upgrade plugin to update my installation until I could convince the hosting company.

   The plugin is quite old, but it worked...
