   W3 Total Cache Network Activate is ending up in
   "This is somewhat embarrassing, isn’t it?"
   Any ideas out there?

   how about deleting w3-total-cache-config.php

   Thanks for the pointer. Couldn't find such a file. I removed W3 Total Cache and re-installed it again. Now it works but not as network install.
