Umm...Akismet has gone INSANE (9 posts)

I have 2 sites currently running wordpress, one of which has been up since *yesterday* (www.biggreengenie.com). I was puzzled when I saw that according to AKismet there are 25 HAM's and 4 SPAM's in my comments for this brand new site with exactly ONE post. Puzzled because...there are no comments. At all. Not one.

So on a hunch I went over to my site that's been running WordPress for 2ish months, http://www.damnshortstories.com, and jumped into the Akismet interface. Holy Shit, I thought as I looked at the stats. According to Akismet, I have over 150 SPAM comments and--get this--1,076 HAM comments. The problem? I have maybe a dozen comments total.

What the hell is going on? Anyone have a clue? BigGreenGenie is running WP 2.6.3, DSS is running 2.6.2. Is there something I need to fix?

    Thanks!

    Jason

You don't need to have comments to have Akismet catch spam, afaik. That is how it works - captures those meeting your criteria before they get added. I don't allow comments on my blog and I still get crap caught by Akismet.

well that's all well and good, except for the 100+ HAM. HAM are "good" comments, and not SPAM, so if it were accurate, that would mean I have 1000+ legitimate comments...and I don't.

Maybe you should have just used the words "good comments" instead of an acronym that could be confused with "bad" comments then? I have never heard the term HAM used before.

Well, actually...Akismet *itself* uses the term HAM, so that's why I used it :)

Not on my site it doesn't. There is nothing in the akismet plugin's options referring to HAM at all. I have no idea what it is doing on yours.

This has happened on both om my blogs as well. Huge HAM counts with no comments.

Do you have any other plugins running? I don't really understand how you would get artificial ham, so to speak.

    Could it relate to trackbacks?

Since January 13 my Ham count is greater than my spam count but I have had NO comments on the blog. I have 26 plug-ins running.
