We want to set up a test WordPress.org site so we can fool around with themes, widgets, etc. for a time before going "live" to the world.

We already have a domain and an html website hosted at http://americancoopworthregistry.org and would like to upload/install WordPress up there but are anticipating conflict problems: index.html or index.php??

What would be our best solution??

    use a subdomain.

Yep. Or if your hosting platform does not allow for sub-domains, just put your test WordPress install into its own directory, like, /test/ for example.

The two will live seperate lives. You can even use the same (mysql) database for them, by changing the "$table_prefix" in the wp-config file for the test installation before you install.

We use GoDaddy as both our registrar and w/site host and I can see that they do offer the ability to set up subdomains. I'll set up a subdomain and see if I can follow the instructions and get WordPress installed.

Re using the separate sub-directory approach: Would entering the URL http://www.americancoopworthregistry.org/test/index fire up our WordPress installation -- bypassing the index.html website in the main directory?

Yes it would. Although the correct URL would be /test/ or /test/index.php in that case rather than /test/index

HeHa! (pls excuse the Yank enthusiasm)

Okay! I wound up using GoDaddy's built-in facility for installing WordPress rather than uploading files from my home computer -- all seems to have gone well.

During the GoDaddy installation process I could not see where I could utilize the subdomain I'd set up last night, but was able to designate a subdirectory so that the WP files are separate from the still operating .html website.

I'm looking forward to "moving in" and doing some serious playing around. Is there anything that WordPress can't do? :-)

Thank you for the help and hand holding!!

Hey I'm having a similar problem here, can you help? I wanted to design a website and test it out before using my work domain that everyone could see (I use bluehost for my hosting). So I downloaded wordpress and used a subdomain that I named "test" in my root folder. I finished designing it and testing it on http://www.test.cosmiccoach.com, which worked great. Yesterday I transferred my files over to my work domain (www.davidharel.com). It didn't seem to work, and now I don't know what to do. I called customer service and they tried to walk me through editing the database to reflect the new URL, which I did under wp_options. Then I went to wp_posts and noticed that the url it listed was my test url from before. Customer service told me that I would need to correct that 117 times, and that even then it wouldn't work for other reasons. I don't understand because I was told many times that I could test out my wordpress site under a subdomain and that it would be no big deal to redirect when I was ready. My last idea was to reinstall wordpress on http://www.davidharel.com and hope that I could transfer the relevant files over from my test folder. However, I have no idea if this will work. Any help would be amazing, I put a lot of work into this website and would hate to have to redesign it from scratch!
