two column form

I’m very new to wordpress but am trying to make a registration form that has two columns, that way the form doesn’t go down like:
1.
2.
3.
4.
but rather
1. 2.
3. 4.
My normal way of fixing something like this would be to add a table, but since I’m using the shortcode in the page, I’m not able to add a table. I’ve read through a lot of threads and see talk about going into the php/css files but I don’t know where I would even begin in those. Is there a simple way to do this?
