TwentyEleven Category Templates Not Working (3 posts)

Using TwentyEleven and wanted to create a page of posts based on one category. I followed the codex for this: http://codex.wordpress.org/Category_Templates

That generally says create a category-slugname.php file and you're done. I created it and then tried going to http://www.mysite.com/slugname and got a 404. I tried this two or three other ways and still couldn't figure it out.

I had done something similar on another site though using the Custom Post Types plugin. I installed that plugin, added the slug there, turned on archives in the settings... and voila, the category-slug.php file got utilized and now this all works.

All that said, why wouldn't the codex instructions work? Besides creating the category and category-slugname.php was I missing something? Any thoughts would be appreciated!

does the http://www.mysite.com/slugname work with the default category template?

    what is your permalink setting?

I was wrong about it working perfectly with the Custom Post Types plugin. I actually ended up changing everything to archive-slugname.php and then still rewrote the files a bit. You can see an example here http://www.wickedbirdmedia.com/news/

I didn't even think about permalinks! they were set to day and name. If I set them to /%postname%/ could this resolve my issue? Will test this later.
