Twenty Twelve - Static homepage - Customize (8 posts)

    Hello all,
I'm currently trying out WordPress for my site and so far so good. I'm quite satisfied with the looks of it and how conviniet everything is. I've come this far: http://www.wkstrm.se/test/ <- it's a test-site only so do not mind the content/pictures.

I like the static homepage with dynamic content, but I'd like to do some customizations to it.

    1. I want the most recent post to only be a "excerpt" of the recent post, not the whole post. I can't seem to figure out how to do that. I've googled, read and googled again and searched these forums for clues on how to do that.

    2. I want to change the pictures showing on the right. Currently there are 4 pictures, I'd like to change amount shown and size of them as well how they are aligned.

    3. I want to change number of "featured posts" headlines in the list below the featured post.

I read here: http://codex.wordpress.org/Pages#Creating_Your_Own_Page_Templates that I should make a child theme so I made a new php file named homepage-template.php, but I don't know what to put in it. I don't know much about php or creating homepages (I did back in 2001 before everything got complicated). Can someone help me out a bit or atleast point me in the right direction and I would be so thankfull. :)

Are you trying to make a child theme first ?

Yes, I might have missunderstood how things work but I thought that creating a child theme for that page should do the trick. I just don't know how to make it they way I want it. :(

You are not currently using a Child Theme. Did you create one (following the linked page above) and then activate it? A child theme is a NEW theme related to the parent theme -- it is not page specific.

Get that working before you try doing anything else.

Ah yes, I see now that I had totally missunderstood the concept of child themes. lol..

I seem to have a lot of reading to do, and then re-read everything to make sure I understand it.

With this child-theme, can I change the width/alignment of columns and such? How much can I change with it?

Yes, you can change pretty much everything with a child theme -- certainly whatever you can change in the parent, you can do in the child.

It takes a bit to understand the concept, but once you get it, it makes good sense and is pretty cool, in fact :)!

The most important for me to change is the looks of the static home page. Then if I can adjust the width and some other minor stuff that is just a plus.

But I know jack shit about php and css.. This will be a bumpy ride I think. :)

    LOL!
These forums are pretty good at bumpy, but learning some basic CSS will be very helpful -- this is a good reference site:

    http://www.w3schools.com/css/

But there are lots more great resources out there, including YouTube videos.
