In the Twenty Twelve Theme,
Only the standard post type has the 'leave a reply' link.
The others do not have this, not any indication of how many comments there has been.
I want to use the other post types such as 'aside' for the way it looks, but do not want to discourage conversation around those posts.
Is this a bug? Is there a way around it?

you'll see that this behaviour is seen here as well.
I don't think that's it's a bug and is intentional. I think that if you want comments on the various posts, you'll need to make a child theme and add your changes to the appropriate file.
