• I am a regular visitor to the WordPress forum and there are a lot of questions about editing the WordPress Twenty Ten theme, it looks like a lot of privateers or novice developers are editing the core theme files from Appearance > Editor.

Is it handshakes all around, pat on the back that has solved the problem, or has it just caused a problem for later?

WordPress 3.1 Beta 1 is in test, what will happen when you press the upgrade button will you loose your changes?

  • People were doing exactly the same with the old Kubrick default theme and there were always howls of dismay when an upgrade completely wiped out their customisations. There are warnings all over the forum about customising Twenty Ten but I guess old habits die hard. Or some people just don’t read around enough…

I see the problem that when a new WordPress convert visits the forum and ask “the experts”, they are not aware of the way an upgrade works.

I read a reply earlier today that is what got me thinking, the “hack it”, “change it”, “cut it”, “add it” replies are often from regular posters that should know how to give better safe advice. ;-(

I agree but there’s also the counter argument that we are really supposed to answer the question that was asked. I’ve got around this by adding a warning about default theme customisation and a link to the Codex’s Child Theme page every time I answer one of these questions. At least that way, the user can make an informed choice.

Perhaps this is something that needs to be brought up on the wp-forums mailing list?
