I think his solution is to turn off the pinging on any post where he refers to himself. But I can't find the old checkbox to do that. Is it gone? Is there a new way to do it on a per post basis?

It was removed as a per-post option. No idea why. But to avoid pingbacks to oneself, always use relative links:
Generates pingback:
http://my.site/one-of-my-posts/
Does not generate pingback:
/one-of-my-posts/
