I try to run the install.php script but receive the following:

    Error establishing a database connection

This either means that the username and password information in your wp-config.php file is incorrect or we can't contact the database server at localhost. This could mean your host's database server is down.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

If you're unsure what these terms mean you should probably contact your host. If you still need help you can always visit the WordPress Support Forums.

Basically I'm sure I've made the right config file with the correct password etc. There's no way that info is wrong and I know my host is running because I've put all the wordpress files onto it...

    Any suggestions?
    Many thanks

I know my host is running because I've put all the wordpress files onto it

That does not mean that your MySQL server (or even your web server) is running. Try reviewing Installing_WordPress_Locally.

found out my host, even though its with the same company as previous websites I've built,is different (has a different name) so I'd put the wrong info under host name in the wp-config file.
after an e-mail they sorted it out for me!~~

didn't have to go through installing wordpress on the office mac but maybe next time!! I really want to try that soon.

    Thanks for ur help esmi
