Trying to move wordpress.com blog to a new host using wordpress.org (24 posts)

Hey everyone, maybe this has been covered, but I have been looking all day and can't seem to find a fix.

I have a blog on wordpress.com and I just got webhosting through GoDaddy and now and running my WordPress.com blog on my own website thru wordpress.org. My problem is, I am exported the XML file from WordPress and I am trying to import it into my hosted database. However, when I do that, it imports a portion of the file and stops. Then, when I try to re-import it, nothing happens. I have tried deleting the file and re exporting it. I have gone as far as deleting the database itself and reinstalling the entire site. It seems to always stop at the same place.

Some stats, I am running a Linix Hosted site through GoDaddy. The file is about 2.4 meg (yes, I even tried to break it up.). Is there anything I can do to get it loaded up? I even tried to import it through MyPHPAdmin, but that didn't work either.

Thanks for your help.

Have you contacted Godaddy about this?

Yes & WordPress.com. Go Daddy had no answer and WordPress.com said it is on wordpress.org's end.

Unlike wp.com, I do not see a link to email support about this.

If there is a way to email them, let me know, but if anyone can help me with this, I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

On your new WordPress site, have you tried Dashboard -> Manage -> Import -> WordPress?

Yes. Only a certain amount of files come over. All the tags and catagories do as well.

It will take me a while to respond to other solutions but I do appreciate the help.

Thank you.

With the coding, I cannot tell. All I know is, not all of it loading. Only 15 or so entries of 365.

.. you said you tried to break it up, but you didn't say what happened with that. Did you succeed in breaking the file up, or not?

if you cannot get the whole file to import, than you may need to break it up, and do it in smaller pieces. That will also give you the opportunity to see if its choking on something in particular.

What's happening is when we import it the first time into the empty database, it only goes part way then stops. After that, no matter how small the file is, it no longer imports. Once we start it, it asks to assign the user, and then it gets to the next page, takes 30 seconds to load and then doesn't import anything. So basically, after that first failed import, it won't import again.

Perhaps the exported file is corrupted. Have you tried exporting again and then importing the new file?

Have yo tried clearing the new DB, then importing the first entries in small increments to se where it stops ?

Perhaps you have a post that somehow got some kind of invalid characters that the new DB doesn't "like"

I have tried that. I broke it into multiple files and multiple users. It almost seems like after a certain point, it all times out and won't download anything else from there. The weird thing though, is when we try to import again, either the same XML file or a different one, it doesn't do anything. It's almost as if once the first import breaks, I can no longer import anything else until I delete and recreate the database.

I am having the EXACT same problem. Was on wordpress.COM. Now switched to hosting at GoDaddy, Linux server, installed WordPress.ORG (2.6).

I exported from wordpress.COM, and imported on my new .ORG blog. The import seemed to be working, and then pooped out. I checked, and only about 20 of my posts had imported. I re-imported the same file, and got some more of my posts to show. I repeated this 5 or 6 times, and then it stopped improving. About 40 of my posts have failed to import. All comments, categories, and uploads that relate to my posts (the ones that made it successfully) seem to have imported correctly.

I have re-exported the file a couple of times, and tried importing the new one. I also tried exporting only my own posts (leaving out the other authors) and tried importing that. It's made no difference, nothing new comes in. One interesting fact: a few posts seem to import AGAIN every time I repeat the process. I ended up with 9 versions of the same post in about 5 different instances. It didn't happen for all of them, only for a few.

The file I'm importing 1.41 MB - the limit is 8MB, so I don't think it's choking because of the size of the import. Has anyone seen any improvement or found a fix for this probelm? I'd really love some help. It's very distressing to have the blog so broken.

Thanks so much,

David

I also have the same problem. I have 249 posts in my wordpress.com blog, but when I imported in to my new web host there're only 219 posts. I tried a lot of times to reimport but with the same result. I dunno what to do with this. I hope we'll get a reply from the wordpress staff. This is quite depressing.

I hope we'll get a reply from the wordpress staff.

Dont hold your breath waiting for that. This forum is run by volunteers; there is no 'staff' here other than moderators - positions that exist, mainly, for the purpose of keeping the forum semi-organized, and free of spam.

I haven't had any experience splitting an XML file, but I've had to do it loads of times with an SQL file (I'd recommend Notepad++ because it's really very good at handling large text-based files)

I did do a search around on google, and someone wrote up a more detailed note about how to split up an XML file (although apparently it's not always 100% accurate judging by some of the comments) but maybe it will work out for you.

http://wolfshowl.com/2008/07/12/xml-file-too-big-to-import/

Any feedback on whether this method works would be great! :)

p/s: I wouldn't recommend trying the first part (editing .htaccess) mainly because most shared hosts (as far as I know) simply don't allow increased memory allowance through this method. And as always, backup backup backup :)

FYI ...

==============================

[I used something called File Splitter 1.31]

What I ended up doing to solve the import problem was:

1. Split the original Import File into four (4) parts.
2. Cut & Pasted everything up to the first '
' in split file #1 into the beginning of splite file #2, #3 and #4.
3. Cut and Pasted

'

'

from the end of splite file #4 into the end of split file #1, #2 and #3.
4. Saved each of the new split files (i.e. #1-4).
5. Imported each of the new split files.

=======================================================

This seems to have done the trick except for:

A) None of the existing video clips are displaying properly on the new version of my blog.

(e.g. the text is there ...

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHoZ_gvdmNM]

but not the vid clip itself)

B) The links from my original blogroll have not been imported.

C) The number of items associated with each 'Category' in the Sidebar hasn't been imported. [i.e. the (#) on the right of each category item is missing]

If anyone can help me out with A, B & C ... that would be very much appreciated. :-)

==============================

Hopefully this process works for you. :-)

Guys, I just solved this problem. A friend of mine helped me. The only thing you only have to do is to re-import again and again your exported xml file until you'll see the bold message ALL DONE at the bottom of the loading page when you import your posts(in my case when I had my few attempts of importing the xml file I didn't see that message at the bottom page. That's why I need to reimport it again until that message will appear, and which means that all your posts are already being imported. My friend told me that there would be no redundant posts since the mysql function(if that what they called it) won't import posts that already exist in your database. He said it's normal that not all our post will be imported at our first or second attempt of importing them. I hope this will also solve your problem in importing your posts.

In your php.ini file (I'm not sure about godaddy) but on bluehost you can put a php.ini file in the directory of where your script executes to overwrite the default php.ini settings (that most likely you don't have access to).

Try changing these lines:
max_execution_time = 300 ;
max_input_time = 300 ;

By default the max_input_time on bluehost was 60 seconds and I had 300 posts with tons of images to import so it would crap out all the time. Changing it to 300 will give it 5 minutes to import, you may need to even go longer though...

There is also this line in the php.ini file as well:
memory_limit = 32M ;

You may want to make sure the memory_limit is larger than the file your importing (double the size would be safe).

Hopefully that helps someone. If you find this isn't working contact your hosting provider to find out how you can edit the php.ini file.
