i have researched trying to get the content background as transparent (white is so boring and stark). i have tried inserting about 10 different codes (from other users questions) into my css but none of them worked. I am using Mantra. If anyone can help me it would mean a lot. thanks!

Try using Firefox with the Firebug add-on for this kind of CSS work.
