• Forgive me if this is elsewhere in the forum (and feel free to expose my ignorance by directing me to it if it does) but I have seem many blogs with truncated posts, is that a specific template being used or is there an admin option that allows that? My issue is that I post some essays that are really long and would love to have the longer posts truncated.

  • Do you want the longer ones truncated (shortened) and the short ones left alone to see full on the front page and category/archives/search pages? Or do you want to shorten all of them?

    There are several ways to do this. If you want to customize your excerpts (short left alone, long shortened) then check out the Loop in Action.

    Customizing the “read more” tag
    the_content() template tag
    the_excerpt() template tag
    The Excerpt Reloaded Plugin for styling the front page excerpts
    The WordPress Loop
    The Loop in Action
    Conditional Tags

    Look around in your WP admin pane > Write > Write Post section. Among the quicktags (above the text area) you’ll see a button <more>. Use it freely 🙂 On your main page the posts will be “truncated” where the <more> tag is inserted + a “more… ” link will be displayed.

    Thanx, folks. I appreciate the assistance. What was weird was that I couldn’t see what the heck moshu was talking about — the ‘more’ button, while working on my site in Safari. When I opened up the admin panel in IE I saw it clear as day. That’s a bummer. < sigh > I hate IE on the Mac.

    Anyway… no browser commentary. Thanx again!

    krugeri, quicktag buttons work in camino…if you want to give it a shot (I like it better than safari…but that’s just me). 😉

    IE for Mac blows.

    Ah… I had forgotten about Camino. I will give it a shot.

    Thanx.

    And don’t forget Firefox!

    The transition from Safari to Camino is a little easier than Firefox. Especially when it comes to exporting/importing bookmarks.

    Although, Camino doesn’t have all the “extras” that firefox has. 🙂 There’s actually a plugin somewhere that gives extra preferences for Camino…can’t think of where or what it is right now, though.
