• I am trying to move a rather large blog from one server (GoDaddy) to another (Dreamhost) and am running across some troubles. I already have a WordPress installation on Dreamhost, and am trying to export the data from the old site to the new installation, but everything I try seems to go to hell on me.

When I try to run an export here:
http://www.lilithsaintcrow.net/journal/wp-admin/export.php (which isn’t even linked to in the admin panel for some reason), it exports an empty file. Zero kb, no data. Boo.

I’ve also tried uploading some plugins that would export the data, but if I go to the plugins page, it says that the plugins folder is empty or missing (which it isn’t). I’m wondering if perhaps the site is using symbolic links or somesuch? I noticed that there are a lot of older installations, but I can’t find an instance of a sym-link.

If I can’t get anywhere with this, I may attempt instead to upgrade the installation, though I fear that this may cause more problems!

As a last resort I’m attempting to transfer the entire database (the SQL files is HUGE; 70mb, so my computer sometimes freezes upon opening it, and it currently doesn’t work when I DO run it because it’s trying to lock tables that don’t exist, so I’m going to need to run a complex find & replace on it, which I’m not sure how to do or if my computer can handle the task.

If anyone has any advice that might help me out, I’d be so grateful … I’ve searched and searched, but I just can’t figure this out! I’m pulling my hair out here! Ack!

  • godaddy should have a mysql database feature, fist back up the mysql database, than the WP installation
than update WP and see what happens, maybe you would want to update to like a bit later version not the newest, like 2.3 not 2.5

i have before done an export of a very big site my movie website from 2.3 to 2.5 and it worked, sadly my categories were messed up but mostly it worked ok, than i did the same thing with taking out the databases the post, post meta and so on, and changing them to match the new structure of 2.5 and this worked too even though some things were lost, your best bet is just updating to like 2.3 and trying to export there, the export file is a xml, its just shortcuts, when your wp imports it there is no data really imported from your pc its all from your older site

this would be the simplest way of doing it? there’s no other way to extract the data or fix the broken parts of the installation?
