I'm using WP version 3.2.1, i don't want to use the_excerpt() to show post, i use the_content() and i tried to add <!--more--> into post but it not works, it display all text outside to screen include <!--more-->. I remember it good in previous version.
One more thing, i use the_content() tag and it don't display Read more even when i insert more some paramater into the_content().

I could assure more function works fine in 3.2.1
If you making call the_content() from theme and used more tag in post panel (make sure not used more tag text in visual mode) then it should work for sure.
Using excerpt is good idea when start paragraph is different then inside single post content for most case.

and
@boshart
it might help if you can post a link to your site.
do you use the code in a page template?
then re-read the links posted by @equalmark
