   I'm currently using a Mac. I'm a mediocre on this and new to WordPress.
   My main reason on why I want to download the software is to install custom themes on my WordPress.com

   My problem here is I can't understand the instructions quite well.
   Can anyone please explain how it works step-by-step?

   This http://codex.wordpress.org/Installing_WordPress#Detailed_Instructions is about as step-by-step as it gets really without someone doing it for you.

   You can't download the software to install custom themes on wordpress.com

   This software is not related to wordpress.com in that manner

   the software gets installed on a server to run your own wordpress

   wordpress.COM is wordpress hosted, you can't install custom themes really
