I’ve installed your beautiful Editor theme for an open access academic journal that I work for. Now I’m trying to translate the theme in Finnish. I’ve followed the instructions at https://array.is/articles/translating-theme/ – but nothing what so ever changes at the site. For the life of me, I can’t understand what I’m doing wrong.

One thing I noticed, the video and the text differ slightly: on the video, only the .mo-file is being modified, and it is renamed as pt-ES.mo. On the text, it is instructed to work with both .po and .mo, and to name them with the language codes only (es_ES). Is this significant? I’ve tried both, though, and each time, modified the wp-config.php accordingly. No result. None.

Also I wonder if one of the plugins I’ve installed could cause a problem. I’ve got Akismet, Child Theme Configurator, Image Widget, Maintenance, Simple Share Buttons Adder and Single Categories. I’m especially suspicious about the last one.

Thanks for giving this a thought,
    Petja

  • Hey Petja,

You should translate the .po file, and use your translation tool to generate the .mo file. If you’re not generating the .mo file, that would be why your translations aren’t showing up. Which translation tool are you using? Poedit a one that is commonly used and is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.

Yes, I am using Poedit, generating the .po-file and .mo-file simultaneously. No luck.

Hey Petja, can you post a link somewhere (Dropbox, Pastebin, etc) with your language files so I can download them and try them here?

I’m about to translate Editor and I can send files to Mike so he can add them in the theme.

    Hi Sami,

Feel free to drop me a line at helloarray at gmail dot com. Thanks for your contribution!

I noticed there wasn’t .pot file? Can you generate that or do you mind if I do it at the same time?

Hey Sami, I think the .po file was intended to be the starter. We’re not well-versed in the current translation standards, so if that’s not the best way to do it we’ll do what we need to do. You’re welcome to generate a .pot file and send along with your translation. If you need anything else from us, just let us know. Thank you!

Yes .pot file should be included for various reasons. It’s the most generic file and works for every software translators are using to translate. And for example Poedit doesn’t create theme description or other header info from style.css or page template names. Not sure if the latest version does it.

Anyways there are couple of great tools to generate .pot file.

    First one is i18n tools.

Or if you’re using Grunt there is same for Grunt task.

Here is couple of tutorials for i18n tools.

I’ll send you the files in a minute.

    Dear all,

Could you also send the files to me: daniel@ritort.net

And the instructions to install a new language, please?

    Many thanks,

    Daniel Ritort

Daniel, do you mean you need Finnish translation files? I send them to Array guys so they can add them in the theme.

Thanks, Sami! We’ll add these to Editor in the next update. Thanks for your heads up about the .pot files. I’m looking into the grunt task to take care of that on the fly.
