Transitioning Company Site to New Template (2 posts)

    Hello,

I work for a small nonprofit organization Our Horizon. We wish to transfer our current template at http://www.ourhorizon.org, (theme magicpro) to a new video-based template, WP-Clear Video. During this transition we want to have as little 'down time' as possible.

    1) Is there a way to work on a new theme while my current theme is still up and running?

    2) Do you have any idea how this transition might effect our formatting?

    3) If we wish to eventually produce a French version of our site as well, does it matter what theme we choose? Will this be easily compatible with WP-Clear Video?

Thanks, any help is much appreciated as we have never done such a transition before.

    Warm Regards,

    Kai

If I were given this assignment, I would clone the live site to a local (on my PC) install and do the experimental development there before making changes to the live site.

Here is an article with the steps I use to migrate (copy) a site: http://wordpress.mcdspot.com/2012/08/22/migrating-a-wordpress-site-step-by-step/

As far as the multi-language site, the theme can certainly make a big difference in the effort. If the theme is not multi-language ready, it could be a really large job.

I have used the WPML plugin. It is free for non-profits. They should be able to tell you if your theme is compatible.
