[resolved] transfered files with FileZilla, now can't find my website (13 posts)

After an incredibly frustrating day with domains, hosting, and ftp, I finally got the files transfered.

I see the WP files in the public_htp folder under my domain name onlinevideomarketingworks.

How do I find the website? I have not created username and password for it yet and does not show up in a Google search.

I'm sure I mucked something up, but I don't know what. Thanks in advance for your time and attention to this post.

    Appreciatively,

    Marty

If your sites URL is onlinevideomarketingworks.com then you need to update the domains nameservers to point to your hosting server. Your hosting company can tell you the settings that you'll need to set, and your domain registrar will be able to help you out in where to put the settings. Once you do that you'll need to wait anywhere from 2 hours up to 3 days for the settings to propegate so that you can see your site live.

If your domain is indeed onlinevideomarketingworks.com it's pointing to hostgator (if this is your hosting)

    Thanks for your responses!

No, I have not read the Installing WordPress info. I will do that now.

Yes, I have pointed the nameservers to Hostgator. It is my domain and it is my hosting company.

The only things I changed in the wp_config.php file were the DB name, DB user, DB password and the Security Keys using the online generator.

What you can try is create a simple PHP file, something like

    test.php

    only containing

    <?php echo "this is a test...'; ?>

    and visit your site

    http://onlinevideomarketingworks.com/test.php

just trying to rule out if you have any other file interferring it on your website root. This looks more like a DNS issue, nothing to do with WordPress.

Usually reporting this kind of problem to your hosting support can solve it for you.

The DNS is working for the site, and I can see the starting install screen that is shown when the DB connection in the wp-config.php file is correct. This makes it look like the DNS changes had taken a litlte bit of time to swap over (they aren't instant) but it's alright now. I'd suggest that you get to installing your site before someone else beats you to it!

Thanks again for your input. I wish I was knowledgeable enough to act on it!

I don't know how to install the site. I'm completely lost at the moment.

If you could point me in the right direction from here I would be grateful.

When you visit your site, you'll see a page that talks about installing WordPress. Just fill in the details on that page and it will install itself. That's really all there is to it. If that page doesn't show yet it means that your ISP's DNS hasn't updated yet and you need to be a little more patient. It can take a while to happen, especailly when you keep trying to visit the same page over and over again - but don't worry, it will come good soon.
