I need advice and answers. I am having problems with my wordpress.org blog site that is being hosted by Hostgator. When I try to interlink within my site, the link will come up with a 404 error message. I've called Hostgator a couple times and they had to manually change the permalinks to fix it. I'm just annoyed about the whole process! Someone told me I could just transfer my custom domain to wordpress.com and it's not a requirement to have a hosting company. She also said wordpress.com is more user friendly to the technologically challenged:-)
The thing is, my blog site is my company website. Would it be easier to deal with wordpress.com and how would I transfer my .org site to .com?

By transferring your current site to wordpress you will be giving up a good bit of freedom. It is a good idea don't get me wrong, but then again I don't know what you mean by interlinking. We here at the wordpress community would gladly help you understand your self-hosted wordpress installation if you'd like.
So what exactly happened, maybe I can help you understand?

If you transfer to wordpress.com you will be restricted to what you can do and since is company website you need to check before you make the transfer.
If you can let use know what permalinks problems you having may be we can help you.
As for me once I have set my permalinks I do not alter any part of it as it will mesh up my search engine urls.

Posted 5 months ago #I didn't change my permalinks at all. Heck, I didn't even know what a permalink was until I called Hostgator and they told me my links weren't working which is what was causing the initial 404 error messages. I didn't understand because it had been working fine before, then all of a sudden wouldn't work. So they went in and manually changed it to a series of numbers and letters instead of the titles for each site. For instance, instead of one part of my site coming up with the permalink "Sample Direct Sales Package", it is now changed to "?page_id=58". They also had to go in to the content itself and put in a bunch of code to make the links work. For instance, they added this to make the link work in one part of the site "<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-162" title="seo-copywriting-services_1" src="http://www.themightyink.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/seo-copywriting-services_1-240x300.jpg" alt="" width="166" height="208" />

Many of the links aren't working now.
Hostgator fixed it but now it's happening again. If you need my sign in information or something to actually look at it, I will give it. I am at my whits end with this! Maybe I should switch hosts because they clearly aren't doing something right.

Log in admin panel click on Settings>>>>Permalinks and select Post name and click on save changes.

Posted 4 months ago #I did that and it still isn't working. I'm not sure if it's because hostgator already manually went in to the content and changed it to that default setting? I'm just going to have to call them again and have them fix it. I was just hoping I could find the solution on my own so I don't have to keep calling them.

I have hostgator account for client and permalinks is working fine if they did make a change it must be .htaccess file as that is the file that rewrites the urls.
