    I am trying to install WordPress on my local iMac for trial before publishing my blog on the internet. I think everything is installed correctly, but I continue to get the "Error establishing a database connection" message when I try running the install.php file. A few words about my setup;

    I am running OSX 10.4.7 - with an administrator account
    I have PHP 4.4.1
    I have MySQL 5.0
    I have WordPress 2.0.4

    I have setup the wp-config.php file with the appropriate DB name, user name & password, and have localhost as the location (I have checked this numerous times). Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Mike

    My guess would be the password. WP uses the old password method found in earlier versions of mySQL. V5 uses a different method. The following URL explains all and how to correct it:

    http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/old-client.html

    if that doesn't fix it come back and we'll look at the socket...

    Thanks for the help. I continued to dig around and found my problem, it had to do with the default socket (as you suggested for part 2). I created a php.ini file and set the default socket to /tmp/mysql.sock and all is good.

    Thanks again for the help.

    I should have done that first! Apple changed it for Tiger for some reason. Glad it's all working.
