I am starting a family website, and planning on including blogs for my children, besides my husband & myself on the main index page. However, honestly, besides getting it installed I have NO IDEA how to customize the template. I have the design set how I would like it at http://www.clandavis.com - hopefully that part isn't completely messed up. I really don't know where to go from here.. Any ideas or advice or a simple website walk through somewhere?

Welcome, davisclan, to the WP community.
Just to get you started, I would suggest that you poke around some of the sites built by community members. There is now a new feature on the forum, in that any registered member that has supplied a link to their own site has their user name hyperlinked, so you can easily find lots of interesting sites from there.
The most basic changes to the WordPress default template are made with the INDEX.PHP page and WP-LAYOUT.CSS file. There are lots of great example templates at Alex King's website as well. Find a big stack of them at his site. You can learn a lot from dissecting those templates.
You have a lot of options for functionality and such, as well as a growing batch of hacks, tweaks, and plug-ins for extending the base functions of WP.
This will get you started. Don't be hesitant to post questions of all sorts here in the forums. Try to be as specific as possible about problems, and supply version info and a link, if possible, to the problem page. There are lots of great folks around her who will help out.
    Most of all, have fun!
    Craig.

    Hi Davis,
That was an excellent intro by Craig. I just want to add that, the first thing that comes to my mind is that you might want to have seven seperate blogs set up, one for each person.
You will have to install wp seven times for this, in seven seperate folders. Like one in www/ryan, another in www/nate and so on, so that the urls to the blogs would be http://www.clandavis.com/ryan and so on. You only need one MySQL database for this. In the wp-config.php files, just use a different "table prefix" for each blog.
Then of course you could link to those blogs from the excellent main page that you already have :)

Welp, Thank you two for your kind words. I was expecting the worse considering some of the threads I have read here. I did get the dots template from Alex King and fiddled with it to get my wonderful *hehe* frog graphic in. My issue now is that I can't figure out how to get it at http://www.clandavis.com/index.php, but itstead it only seems to work at http://www.clandavis.com/wordpress/index.php .
    Any advice here?

You have to have all the wordpress files in the root directory, instead of in the wordpress directory. The blog is setup in the directory the files are in. Each directory you need wordpress in, you have to have all the wordpress files. Now in order to change the blog you have at clandavis.com/wordpress to clandavis.com, you will have to copy over all the files to the root, and change the blog_url variable references in the admin page, wherever they occur. There have been other threads discussing how to move the blog from one directory to another.
Good graphics, I should say ;)
