• Hi there,

I’ve been trying to sort this out for a while but something keeps on going array.
I’m using the Twenty eleven theme.

I’m trying to build a simple top navigation that is centered with even spacing between the topics and moved to the top, but no matter what I do it seems to just sit a bit to the right…

Any ideas/help would be so greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

  • Your link goes to an error message — “not found”

Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues. First create a child theme for your changes.

Oops, I fixed the type. Sorry abou that.
And I’ve been working with a child them 🙂

I’ve previously followed this tutorial which worked great but I still run into the weird alignment issue…

I also don’t understand why there’s such a large gap between the content and the menu now… sigh.

    Suggestions?

Your site is not using a child theme.

I had just saved the original theme on my computer.

It’s backup but now the background won’t change to white… Hah I keep on making it worse.

I had just saved the original theme on my computer.

That is not creating a child theme. Please see the link I gave above.

Okay that’s all done. I made sure the original theme is untouched.
Any suggestions regarding my original question?

Still an error message when using that link…”fatal error”

^ I was playing around with something, it’s normal now. I’m going to stop touching it until someone tells me what to do next. Sorry!

The page has almost no formatting at all — looks like your child theme is not set up correctly. Nothing to “help” with until the CSS file is working.

If you are seeing it normally, try clearing your browser cache to get rid of cached stylesheets.

You need to remove all of the parent’s CSS from your child’s stylesheet except the parts you changed. Ditto for all other files in the child theme.

The whole point is to have a really stripped down formatting.
No background colours or additional images.

I’ll try removing the rest of the css, thanks.

If you have simply copied the parent theme, then you still aren’t running a child theme. A child theme only contains your customisations.
