Timthumb and Youtube? (7 posts)

    Hello,
i was wondering if it's possible to use timthumb to get images from external sources and create thumbs on the fly.

I need this particularly for youtube: I'm searching for a solution that will do this automatically, without the need of adding custom fields to post.

    Anyone has got a solution?

    Thanks a lot for support

Youtube thumbnails are available on a dedicated server (ytimg.com),
    without any special script.

    The syntax is :

    Default thumbnail :
    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/default.jpg
    example :
    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/EVBsypHzF3U/default.jpg

    Alternate thumbnails :
    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/1.jpg and http://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/2.jpg
    examples :
    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/EVBsypHzF3U/1.jpg
    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/EVBsypHzF3U/2.jpg

    HQ version :
    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/0.jpg
    example :
    http://i.ytimg.com/vi/EVBsypHzF3U/0.jpg

Thanks a lot; the main goal was to pass timthumb the correct URL (video id) to grab the image and have it thumbnailed and cached.

I've solved it using timthumb in combo with a plugin

    ciao!

    Hey neuville,

Any chance you could share the name/link of that plugin you used to solve the problem?

    Thanks :)

    Found this plugin.

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/video-thumbnails/

Works perfectly for grabbing YouTube thumbnails, though I'm not PHP savvy enough to know how to tell WP to use this if no timthumb-able image is found in the post.

    Hello Paul,
    the plugin is Youtube Thumbnailer.

Very easy to use (it adds a custom field in the post with the YT thumbnail url)

    ciao!
