am i right in assuming that a time stamp is where the post is published at a certain time/ date of your choosing.
is so, how do i use it? because my efforts haven't worked, and i'm struggling to find any in depth info on it.

How do you want to use it?
It inserts automaticaly the publish date/time into your posts.
If you want to edit it - check the Edit timestamp box and change it. Save the post.
so it's not for delayed posting then.
so if i go on holiday and set up 5 posts, one to be published for each day even though i'm not there, then how do i set that up, becasue that's very important to me?
I am confused. I just told you how to edit the timestamp - and that includes setting it for future dates.
What is the part you don't comprehend?
the part that doesn't work. i've done that and nothing happens.
opened up the timestamp, ticked the box, set the time and date, then hit save and i've nothing??
If you set the time/date to the future, your post won't show up until that date/time.
You'll see it, however, if you visit Manage Posts.
The key, as moshu pointed out, is that most folks to actually tick the checkbox "Edit timestamp" before saving.
Also a very good discussion on the whole future posting thing:

And just for continuity, Otto42 has made a suggestion about improving cron management at http://trac.wordpress.org/ticket/4388
thank you, it was the "published" status that was throwing me off.
