Thumbnails upload ok but large image does not?!

Hi guys,
just running a site locally in development here. try as I might I can’t get the full size version of the image to upload successfully into my uploads folder.. the thumbnails are created just fine but the actual original image i have tried to upload never uploads correctly.. the jpg (or whatever image file) is there but corrupt..
anyone else encountered this?
