[resolved] thumbnails missing (32 posts)

After updating, thumbnails went down, now showing custom image for posts without images or without featured image.
Really makes no sense using the plugin if it acts like this...

Hey John, thanks for the follow up!

Yeah, we are still investigating what could be going on with our thumbnailer, since the problem is harder to detect than we initially thought. That's why we appreciate all the help we can get!

Any chance you could send us the link to your blog, so we could have a closer look at it? Also — do you have any other plugins installed? If so, which ones? Do you use any special way of posting/inserting/editing images in your blogposts?

The reason why I am asking all this is because we are trying to find out a pattern for this weird behavior and because we are trying to replicate it on our side.

Any update on this is -as said before- greatly appreciated! Here's my email address: support@zematna.com

You can also download & install the previous version of our plugin, where our thumbnailer should work just fine.

Take care & I'm looking forward to your reply!

    Best,
    Silvo

Hey John, thanks for the heads up!

This has happend after you updated our plugin to the latest version, right? And all of your posts (even those without images / video only) had thumbnails before that?

Let me know, we'll gladly take a look!

Also — could you try to install our new plugin with a slightly modified thumbnailer, to see if it's any better? You can get it here: http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/related-posts-by-zemanta.zip

We'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for your precious feedback!

Take care & I'm looking forward to your reply!

    Best,
    Silvo

Thanks for the fast reply Silvo.

Yes after the last update (I updated about 10 mins ago). All the posts had thumbnails before the update.

Only problem I had before that, was that some thumbnails were stretched horizontaly a bit.

Just to clarify, not all thumbnails are missing in every post. Some posts have all their related thumbnails, some posts have some thumbnails missing, other posts have no thumbnails.

I ll give the modified version a try and I will get back to you.

    Thanks for your time.

    John

    Silvo, a quick question:

Do I have to just update the "related-posts-by-zemanta/thumbnailer.php" file or is it something else that needs to be changed also?

John — just remove the previously installed plugin all-together and install the one from the link over here: http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/related-posts-by-zemanta.zip

You won't loose any settings, so no worries on that end.

No need to manually update any .php files.

Let me know how it goes or if I misunderstood you in any way! Thanks!

Hey John, thanks for taking your time and giving it a shot — we really appreciate it!

But since WordPress works on time intervals to acknowledge new thumbnails, we'd like to ask you, if you could leave it installed for the next 30 minutes or so. But we can perfectly understand if you wish to switch to your old setup, with the complete set of working thumbnails.

The best way to do that is to switch to the older version of our plugin, which you can get on our developers page: http://wordpress.org/plugins/related-posts-by-zemanta/developers/

In either case, do let me know how it goes! And thanks again for all your help! :)

Take care & have a nice weekend!

    Silvo

No problem Silvo, I ll leave this installation on for the next 5 days or so, to see how it goes.

Have a nice weekend yourself too.

    No misssing thumbnails anymore.

Some are still stretched though. Why is that?

Hey John, sorry for the late reply and I'm glad you have all your thumbnails in place now! But the stretched thumbnails are a mystery to us. We're suspecting because of the video thumbnails — in which size are they stored in your media gallery? Is there a chance you could change the size measurements in which they are stored in?

Also — are you using any other plugin to insert your YouTube videos (if so, which one) or are you using the WordPress's default way of inserting media?

    Let me know! Thanks!

    Best,
    Silvo

    Hi Silvo

My theme (Videozoom) has a built in video embedder and "featured image" grabber, that is what I use to capture the thubmnails. The original featured image size is 480x360 that is then shrinked by wordpress and used in the related posts.

The problem with the stretched thumbnails, is that some are stretched and some are not. Also this is not consistent through time, some that were stretched yesterda, may not be today!

Hm, yeah, this is strange indeed!

But is it possible to change the size of that featured image into some other dimension that our plugin would hopefully extract correctly? Say 180x180 or 250x250?

Although I cannot be sure if this will help you out with this issue, since our plugin is not the only one completely responsible on how your thumbnails will look like at the end. But do let me know if this is possible or if it helped in any way.

    Thanks & take care!

    Best,
    Silvo

    Hi Silvo

I have a screenshot of the problem.

The first and last photo of the first row are normal thumbs, the other three in that row are stretched and have black bars at the top and bottom of the thumbnail.

Does Zemanta place these bars on the thumbnail, causing it to distort?

I will try changing the dimensions of the featured image and see how it goes

Hey John, just one quick question — did you make any changes to your theme editor in the past? If so, which ones?

Besides that — no, our plugin should not add any black stripes to your thumbnails, it should just take care that they stay "square-ish", but without being squeezed or squashed (at least in the latest version of it).

Also — did you manage to change the sizes of those featured images/thumbnails in your built-in video embedder?

    Thanks for all your feedback!

    Have a nice weekend!

I have 1 post that doesn't display a thumbnail in your plugin even though the image appears to be attached in the same way as the others. 0 featured.
Thought you might like knowing about it for comparison. I think maybe it doesn't like how small it is...

Hey, thanks for the link, and yes, I'm afraid you are right — our plugin cannot extract thumbnails from images that are smaller than 150x150 pixels.

I would strongly recommend you to use images that are bigger than this in your future blog-posts, if you wish to have non-generic thumbnails in your related posts.

And do let me know if you have any additional questions regarding our service or if you need any assistance — I'm here to help!

Take care & have a nice day!

    Best,
    Silvo

This thread is helpful, but didn't quite address a problem I'm having. I have your plugin installed at http://www.liberatenet.org and some posts aren't having thumbnails grabbed from them. I have put images into many of those posts, but there are many that are still showing up in the related posts with the default thumbnail. The images are all larger than 150x150. Are there other characteristics that images must have to be picked up by the plugin?

Hey Nick, thanks for reaching out & I'll gladly help!

Would you please be so kind and send me the link to those exact posts which have those related posts with the generic thumbnails? I tried to look them up myself, but was unfortunately unable to do so. Or have you somehow solved this in the meantime?

Let me know, I'll do my best to help you out!

Take care & have a nice weekend ahead!

    Silvo

Well, now I can't find one either. I did update the plugin a while before I posted here, but it's possible that it just took WordPress a bit longer to aggregate images from all the posts. In any case, I don't seem to have a problem at the moment. Thank you for your responsiveness...I'll come back if I have an issue!

Hey Nick, yes, WordPress has it's own periods when it's extracting your images for your thumbnails, which is why you had to wait a little bit to get the right results. Either way — I'm happy this case is now resolved for you.

If you happen to have any more questions or if there's anything else not completely clear — do not hesitate to ask, since I'll gladly help!

Take care & have a nice day!

    Silvo

    FYI

I just found this post which helped me figure out that Related Content by Zemanta version 1.2.2 was causing my images to disappear when posted. I downgraded to version 1.2.1 and I'm no longer having this issue. The issue I'm having still is when I reuse a image from the media library it reuploads the old image which now shows as the latest image. So now I have two copies of the same image. When Zemanta plugin is disabled I can use old images and it doesn't make a duplicate copy.

Hey, thanks for the follow up, although we're not completly sure what's going on over there — which images are disappearing when posted? Your own ones, which you inserted in your posts or the thumbnails from your related posts? Are they just missing out or are they disappearing from your Media Gallery?

Any chance you could send us the link to the blog in question, so we could have a closer look at it? We'd really appreciate it, if possible.

Let us know, we're eager to help! Take care & have a nice weekend!

    Best,
    Silvo
