Thanks, I'm already checking your site. From a quick look, I see you set the plugin to get the thumbnails from Featured Image. Apparently, the plugin is having problems finding the image path for most of your posts (except for the first one, which is showing a thumbnail as of now).

Probably a dumb question but, did you set a Featured Image for all these posts?

In previous version I could check "Generate all thumbnails for me", but now I don't have an option to check for this or "Use thumbnails selected by me".

When I revert back to previous working version, it's set to incorrect thumbnail creation - "Use thumbnails selected by me", and not "Generate all thumbnails for me".

The question is how I can select current plugin version to "Generate all thumbnails for me" as it did in previous versions?

..And no - I never set a featured image - it's counterproductive, static and not an option for me, at least.

Ah, I see. This needs a bit of an explanation then.

As you can tell, the thumbnail feature is still a work in progress and a lot has changed from the version you're currently using (2.1.4, correct?) to the most recent releases of the WordPress Popular Posts plugin.

Back then, WPP relied on Timthumb (a third-party PHP script) to generate thumbnails. However it seemed to cause more trouble than benefits so in later versions of the plugin I decided to switch to the Feature Image since it's a core WordPress functionality and works out-of-the-box. No extra configurations needed, no need to play with file/directory permissions. The drawback was that people had to set their own images manually for the thumbnail to work. That turned out to be a major PITA since, well, basically everyone was being forced to set a thumbnail for each post - nobody liked it, as expected.

Because of that, on a more recent version (2.3.0 or earlier, I believe) I re-added the possibility to have WPP pick the images for you - only that it has been relocated to wp-admin > WordPress Popular Posts > Tools. By default, the plugin is set to get the thumbnails from the Featured Image (hence why most of your posts are not displaying a thumbnail) but you can change that to First image on post and the behavior will be the same as on 2.1.4.

    Hope that helps!

    Hey,

Unfortunately changing to either setting only has one outcome - "No Thumbnail".

I've set to "First image on post" now, so you can check it out.

there are also plugins that will create featured images automatically. based o first image in a post. that might be useful for this particular plug-in issue as well as with other plug-ins in the future.

I had to revert back to last working version again, please let me know when you're available again, and I'll revert back to beta.

BTW: the wpp.css is not loaded in beta version, so the count and views are not on separate line as per css.

Thanks Morten, I've identified the problem and will let you know when a new development version is available. Hopefully a fix will be ready in the next hours.

I've installed your last version, and now the style is used, but unfortunately still "No Thumbnail".

I'm letting it run the next hours, so you may check.

    Hey Morten,

Been doing some research on your case and by taking a look at your site's HTML code it seems that you're using the Aperture theme by Woo, correct? If so, what method are you using to insert the images into your posts?

    Yes it's Aperture,

I use WordPress' default - Insert Media, Upload Files and then drop the file. I then copy the URI and paste to Aperture's "Image" section.

And there you get again the same Media lightbox from before, pick From URL and paste the URL, right? After that, a preview of the image is shown on Aperture's Image section, correct?

If all of the above is true then it seems to me that your image is not being appended to the post content itself but assigned to a custom field. Can you please try changing the thumbnail source from First image to Custom field, and then set its value to image?

Yes, and image is previewed in Aperture's image section..

Supplying the custom field "image" does now display thumbs, but their scale is now utterly messed up.

    Yes, just noticed that now.

Here's the deal: when I added Custom field as an option to get the image thumbnail, what I had in mind was 'the user creates it to his/her liking and then tells the plugin where it is'. I never thought of the possibility of people/themes passing full-size images to this field expecting WPP to do the resize automatically, hence why it gets distorted when forced to the specified dimensions - it's not being resized at all.

To solve the problem, I'd need to add some sort of functionality to detect/ask the user if the image should be resized by WPP or just use it as it is.

Anyways, thank you for your patience and your help! Now that I know what to do next, feel free to jump back to the stable version of WPP while I work on the modifications.

It's not supposed to be easy :-)

No problem - I appreciate your availability and willingness to accommodate. It's only natural that I too am available and assist until it's resolved.

    Thanks again Héctor .

Alright, here's another attempt to fix the thumbnails! Hopefully, this time things will work as expected.

One note, though: as I posted before, a switch was needed in order to know whether to resize the image set via Custom Field or not. So, a new option has been added in wp-admin > WordPress Popular Posts > Tools. By default, the plugin won't resize the image URL set in the custom field - this is because I still believe this choice allows you guys to create your own thumbnails (which is a nice thing, IMHO). To have WPP resize the images, please set Resize image from Custom field? to Yes.
