• My client has not been updating her website. She has over 13,000 unmoderated comments, all of which are spam I think and as of yesterday, this is what shows on her site:

Warning: Parameter 1 to ec3_filter_posts_fields() expected to be a reference, value given in /home/forbid/public_html/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 227

When I went to Export Atahualpa (the theme) Setting File, it is badly corrupted. Is my best next move to change theme to 2012, reinstall Atahualpa and restore it?

  • This does not sound like a hack but rather an incompatible plugin. Has the host upgraded PHP recently? A quick search points to the Event Calendar plugin as a likely culprit.

You might want to disable all plugins and switch t the Twenty Twelve theme and use the process of elimination. At the very least I would highly recommend you diable comments until you add some comment security (Akismet, captcha, etc.).

CedarPointConcepts you are a genius. Thank you so much. I now need to upgrade everything she has not upgraded and get rid of the 13,000 comments. Yikes! I have never seen such a mess.

I had thought this problem was due to something not being compatible with the newer php, so I was going to switch to TwentyTwelve etc. but it seems that is not necessary now. thanks so much for saving me time!

Glad you got it sorted out. You might want to install a plugin that will notify you of updates:

    http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-updates-notifier/

The Wordfence Security plugin will also send notifications of plugin/core/theme updates as well as provide additional security and information regarding your WordPress installation:

That is very helpful, thanks again. I will certainly take your advice, for all the help it will do her. She is one of those people who scream computer illiteracy and yet who wants me to fix everything for free. I keep telling her I am trying NOT to be a non-profit organization. 🙂
