Not sure if this is the right group - forgive me if not.....

Just stumpled upon Thesis Theme for WordPress http://diythemes.com/thesis/?a_aid=ls

What I would like to know if there are any similar editing back end widgets like this - but for free - and for existing themes?

    Can anyone help me?

Many themes, even free ones, have at least some admin functions. Keep in mind that, generally speaking, 'free' also usually means you need to do a lot of configurations/customizations to really stand out, you'll have less support, and get fewer backend tools.

It's also not fair to compare free themes to Thesis since, IMO, has one of the most powerful backends out there.

Anyway, there are plenty of places to get free themes but you can start with the WP theme directory.

I just took a look at Thesis and envied that I could'nt do this with my theme wich I totally can not edit this way.
    I use Statement by BlogOhBlog.com on http://www.karstenjensen.dk/blog

I didn't compare the free and those you are paying for - just thought there were a tool that could do this :-)

I'm still not sure what you mean by "this". I know you're referring to widgets but in order to answer your question more accurately, I could use a bit more detail on what you're trying to accomplish.

Allright :-) Sorry but English is not my motherlanguage :-)

What I would like is a plug-in so I can kind of edit my theme in WP's backend - but without doing it by coding. A kind of customization of the theme like you can do with Thesis when using their themes.

I just thought there might were a kinde of plugi to WP that gave more options regarding onces chosen theme.

Hope I have explained it a bit better now :-)

There are thousands of plugins for backend tweaking so you don't have to code. These will work with just about any theme.

Additionally, most themes will come with a set of backend tools but if you have specifics about what you'd like to accomplish, I'm sure someone can point you in the right direction.

In order to accomplish what Thesis comes with, you might need a good number of plugins. If you're hesitant about spending on a premium theme, then go with a free one first and as you fine-tune your site, you'll be able to identify your needs as you go.

Thanks Gabe for taking your time to reply.

have you got any ideas what to search for in backend tweaking? Can't seem to find any....

I think what Karsten is referring to is the user friendly theme editing tools that allow you to change things like the header image, background color (and so on...), without actually using or seeing any code..

Lots of theme have these options, some are more fully fledged and allow a greater deal of style/layout control without having to look at or understand any code.

So essentially what i think is being asked is if there are tools(plugins?) that allow the same level of theme manipulation.

I think that's pretty much a "No" because theme's vary alot on base code, i can't see how any plugin could modify a theme in the same way a given theme's custom written tools could..

    I could be wrong... :)

Karsten asked for backend "widgets", which could mean anything.

For instance, if he's looking for SEO tools, some themes have a set of built in tools for that. Of course, he could just grab something like all-in-one SEO if the theme doesn't have it.

The point is, if he doesn't know what he's looking to accomplish, simply asking for a bunch of tools isn't going get any good responses.

Gabe - origionally I asked for backend widgets etc. not quite knowing what to call the plugins I need. But as t31os states (like I did earlier) I'm looking for ways of editing the theme just like t31os suggest.

And yes - maybe there is no such tool for themes. I could not find any and that's why I posted my question.

As explained my current theme does not have any methods of altering it unless I do some codeing.

Not sure what i can suggest, other then to keep on looking at themes. Even if the default layout looks bad, if it's got the options you want, it won't matter really, as you'll be able to custom it.

Just grab 20 or so free themes from the theme directory, load em up, see what kinda options you get, if you don't like it move along to the next, and so on...

Could be a boring process, but it's the only one i can think is going to find you what you want, or close to it... short of paying for a premium theme that is..

Atahualpa has piles of options, maybe that would be suited?
