I'm interested in changing the theme of my site and from the research I've read here, when I change themes I'll have to be prepared to add widgets, plugins etc. to the active theme. I'm up for all those required updates/fixes once I make a decision on which theme I want to commit to. However, can I change themes one day, preview them (knowing that certain parts aren't going to be perfect) and then revert to my current theme by uploading and restoring my database from the previous day? From the little I know, it would seem the easiest way to switch back. (I would force a back-up and then download a copy of the database before starting)

You don't have to do anything with your database to change themes. You can change from one to another and back anytime you want :).
