    Hi
I have a number of sites, at the moment I am developing http://www.moretonbay.biz. The issue is that I want to add members/contributors area and a directory to this site. This part of the site will have a different theme to the rest of the site.
I have never used subdomains before.
Can I create a subdomain, where I put all the pages/posts containing members/contributors and directory?
    More questions:
    1. Would this work for the contributors and directory?
    2. Would this have a negative effect on the main site?
    3. Would this have a negative effect on the SEO?

It sounds like you should look into multisite. I think there are also plugins that can do different themes for different posts/pages, but I don't think that would help with the subdomains.

I can't speak to to the SEO effects of subdomains.

    Ok .
Also maybe subfolders would be better, although I have never used them.

Multisite supports both subdomains and subfolders.
