    When I insert text into a page, then move the cursor back to the beginning of the text and insert an image, the text gets shifted down to the bottom of the image rather than wrapping around it.

  • Are you using the “align image” settings?

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Wrapping_Text_Around_Images

    are you setting any ‘alignment’ when you add or edit the image?

    when you insert an image, in the latest wp3.5, you need to scroll down on the right to reach the ‘Attachment Display Settings’ where you can choose an alignent;

    or you can set an alignment when you edit the image.

    also, ‘headings’ would not wrap around an image.

    Thank you both very much for your help. Setting the alignment solved the problem immediately. I feel like an idiot but at least I’m a grateful one.
