Twenty Eleven
[resolved] - How do you expand the width of the main column? (18 posts)

    Hello,

I have a self-hosted wordpress site. I've just installed the 2011 theme, with no sidebars (one column only).

Would you tell me the way to expand the width of my main text column?

    Thanks so much.

    Chris Masse

Do not edit the Twenty Eleven theme. It is the default WordPress 3.2 theme and having access to an unedited version of the theme is vital when dealing with a range of site issues.

For this reason, it is recommended that you consider creating a child theme for your customisations. Once your child theme is active, we should be able to help with the customisation.

I would actually like to decrease the width of my main column (which I am sure would just be the opposite of what chrisfmasse is asking) on a static page and add a photo on the right. I have already created a child page.

@neyv: It is considered impolite to interrupt another poster's thread. Please post a new topic.

I simply felt that the same question was being asked, and I felt that the reply would benefit both chrisfmasse and myself. And, everything would be in one place. My intention was not to be rude, however since I am new to this, and you claim that this is the protocol, I will submit a new post.

See if any of this helps? I just did a series of posts on editing twentyeleven. Part of it was adjusting the theme width. Bigger sidebar, smaller margins, etc.

Sure 'nuff! It's not exactly what you are looking for I don't think, but hopefully one of the posts can get you pointed in the right direction to figure out your edits!

Don't you want to publish your child theme? :-D

I can throw it in a zip if you'd like to look at it?

Some stuff won't work exactly as seen in the theme, I keep a lot of my functions in a functionality plugin..... but I'm happy to share (heck... I'll share the plugin too, if it helps)

The best way would be to post it at WordPress.org for everybody to use it.

    Happy Summer.

I'll be honest, don't much feel like going through the review process for a simple child theme. And definitely don't want to go through the plugin process. As it is, my plugin has a lot of hardcoded bits to link to and display follower stats, I'd have to recode things to allow users to input their own stuff through a form, etc.

But it you'd like to pick through the code or whatever

The link won't be live until tomorrow about this time, the post is scheduled....

It has my child theme, and functionality plugin both in that zip, so don't try to install it without unzipping and pulling out the 2 files.

    @esmi: You're kidding, right?

All throughout these forums, we're told NOT to start new threads when an existing thread will do. And you knock this guy down for doing what he's supposed to?

And thanks, Voodoo for your help!

not here - as far as i know.

it keeps the forum cleaner and easier to follow if topics are kept to one questioner at a time - if someone has 'exactly' the same problem, it would be enough for them to simply watch the process and wait for an answer.
and too often, the 'i have the same problem' turns out to be quite a different issue.
nothing to object if someone wants to continue a resolved topic, however this could lessen their chance to get an answer.
