Multi-Column Theme That Displays Content in Columns Based on Category (4 posts)

I'm the hunt for a specific type of theme that I haven't yet come across, and I was hoping some resident sages may offer some suggestions.

    THE GIST
I'm looking for a multi-column theme that will display posts in multiple columns, dependent upon the category assigned to the post.

    EXAMPLE
Let's say we have a three-column theme that has 1) a sidebar, 2) content column A, and 3) content column B. Anything I post in categories W and X automatically goes into column A, and all posts in categories Y and Z appear in column B. Does any such beast exist?

    WHY
Let's say I have two types of posts--regular length and short, twitter-like posts. I'd like to separate the columns in which those posts appear, and I'd like to control the column in which they appear by the category I assign to them.

    FURTHER
More than two content columns and the ability to easily change the width of said columns.

    Thanks for your help!

Roll your own (or convert an existing)?

In your searching, try searching for newspaper or magazine style themes.

I think you would have to create your own layout then use some of the tags to call in your post from categories etc and other from your regular posts

@HandySolo: Many thanks for the useful link. I'm a newbie, but Rachel's concise explanation was quite easy to digest. I'll continue a search for newspaper or magazine style themes for something that will work for the time being until I feel confident to roll my own.
