I'm in the process of creating my own theme for WP (first WP theme ever) and the static pages I'm using to create the CSS code is starting to look the way I want (haven't tried IE 6 yet :) ).

Anyway, I thought I copy an existing theme and make my modifications. Is there any special theme that is especially useful for this or should I just take the default theme?

i always start my themes from sandbox these days:

it can be a bit confusing, but you can basically ignore everything in functions.php (leave the file as it is in your theme)

some people swear by building from the "classic" theme that's in the default wordpress installation.
