[resolved] Theme Spun--Put side bar visible on the left or right of Home (26 posts)

    I am new to wordpress and I have no idea if I can move my side bar in this theme.
    I'm using the Spun, one of the featured themes from wordpress.

    So the side bar only appears when I hover my mouse over the "+" sign on the bottom. I was wondering if I can actually move the sidebar to the left or right (maybe if I make columns? Since this theme is one column).

    Also on a side note, how can I make the header font bigger?

    The website is aspirendream.com

    Can you provide links to images illustrating the layout you want, for each page that has a unique layout?

    Thank you Andrew for the reply. So I want this theme to look like my previous blog which is

    http://aspirendream.wordpress.com/

    So people can see my widgets on the sidebar especially the subscribe bar.

    Do you think it's doable?

    You can do it and the theme will need a lot of modifications, how familiar are you with CSS and maybe HTML?

    I'm somewhat familiar but might as well say I'm totally clueless. I have been searching for the whole day trying to figure it out, but I don't think I can only use the column plug-in.

    Would you be able to guide me through it?

    I don't think I'll have enough time to do that. In general here's what you need to do:

    1. Display block the sidebar
    2. Display none the "+" (plus) button
    3. Float right the primary div
    4. Float left the sidebar div
    5. Give the primary div something like 60% width
    6. Give the sidebar div something like 30% width

    That's actually a really clear process. Thank you so much for your help!

    Do those modifications in either a Child Theme style.css file or Custom CSS plugin

    Gah, I need quick help. I've tried using Custom CSS and tried typing the following to block/hide the sidebar but no luck.
    Am I doing something wrong?

    #sidebar{display:none;}

    Also, how can I find which one is the + button?

    You want to display block the sidebar

    Also, how can I find which one is the + button?

    Use the Firebug tool in Firefox to help you understand what HTML/ CSS you need to target. Right click on the + button and select "Inspect element".

    Andrew - thanks for outlining the steps, that was helpful.

    Claudia - I wanted to do the same thing, and it took me a minute to figure out the coding, so I thought I should share:

    .page #primary {
    	float: left;
    	width: 70%;
    }
    #secondary {
    	clear: right;
    	display: block;
    	padding: 50px 0;
    	float: right;
    	width: 30%;
    }
    .sidebar-link {
    	display: none;
    }
    .page .hentry {
    	padding: 0px;
    	width: 100%;
    }
    .widget-column {
    	width: 100%;
    }
    .one.widget-column {
    	float: none;
    	margin: 0 0 0 40px;
    }

    Thank you so much!!! You don't know how much I have been struggling to figure this out. I can't thank you enough. I'll try it right now.

    Hi there,
    So I just tried it and it looks good except the side bar is still at the bottom. I was wondering if there was a easier way to show only 2 rows of 3 circles on each row and on the side have the sidebar there.

    Thank you!

    I think @kmolinanauert meant to recommend this:

    .blog #primary {
    	float: left;
    	width: 70%;
    }

    .blog #secondary {
    	clear: right;
    	display: block;
    	padding: 50px 0;
    	float: right;
    	width: 30%;
    }

    .blog .sidebar-link {
    	display: none;
    }

    .blog .widget-column {
    	width: 100%;
    }

    .blog .one.widget-column {
    	float: none;
    	margin: 0 0 0 40px;
    }

    how can I make the header font bigger?

    The title:

    .site-title {
     /* Original 24px */
     font-size: 25px;
    }

    The navigation

    .main-navigation {
     /* Original 14px */
     font-size: 15px;
    }

    It looks good Claudia! If you have the solution you needed, you can mark the topic as 'Resolved', which helps the Spun theme's reputation.

    Andrew, will she still need the .page selector for her pages - e.g. 'About', 'Contact'...?
    Thank you for your help... my own knowledge is pretty rudimentary.

    I'm not sure which pages she wants it on, but her home page doesn't have the "page" class.

    Hi guys,

    So thank you so much for your help. I have one more question but I don't know if I should be starting a new thread or writing it here.

    I know WP has the categories function but it doesn't work the same as "pages."

    I want to keep my home page dynamic so it keeps uploading recent posts but I want the travel content to go into the travel page
    and food content into the food page. (so like archives)

    People have been suggesting using categories but the problem is I want to make it look official like the current pages divisions I have at the moment.

    Also I would just like to use the categories for my travel page so I can divide the posts into countries.

    I was wondering if anyone can help me with this or is this way too complicated...

    Thanks for all your help

    If I understand you right, this is what I would suggest:

    Your Categories
    - Travel (parent category)
    + Colombia
    + Ecuador
    + et cetera
    - Food
    - Any other categories you want

    Your Custom Menu
    - Travel (category)
    - Mmm (food category)
    - Contact (normal page)
    - About (normal page)

    Your menu would look the same as it does now, but instead of being all normal pages, the Travel and Mmm pages are generated from posts in that category. Does that make sense?

    I understand perfectly. Thank you for the clear explanation. However how can I merge the category into my current menu?

    So I won't touch my contact and about, but the category, I can only show as widgets on my side bar...

    Go to Appearance > Menus. On the left side you have the option of adding Pages, Links, or Categories to the menu. Save your custom menu, and then set it as the primary menu under the 'Manage Locations' tab.

    Hi there,

    I know this question (put side bar visible on left or right) is resolved, but not for me.. :-(
    I've copied the code into my own CSS, but no luck..
    The side bar (1) is visible (so no + sign anymore), but now is visible on the right Bottom side.. I would like it to be next to the main content.

    Besides this, the gallery widget is really, really (really..) small on my iPad (to keep the fancy Spun theme alive, I've chosen to switch off the responsive theme) and not visible on my iPhone..

    Can somebody help me with this one..

    My site is droombaangezocht.wordpress.com
