    Hi:

I just had a WordPress site dumped on me and I'm trying to come up to speed with little experience. Right now, I'm trying to get the existing slides in the home page header proportional. There must be an easier way. Several were put in at their original size, then the jpg would be resized to the dimensions of the header -- usually stretching the image badly. I fixed one by fiddling with the size in photoshop, cropping and finally getting something that seemed OK, but there must be an easier way. In the Media menu, I see the option for aspect ratio, but don't understand that well enough to get a result that fits the screen header, isn't stretched and shows the image correctly (if it's too big, the image centers, cutting off the top and bottom). I've also been unsuccessful in cropping images there.

Help and advice would be greatly appreciated or a plugin that works better. Do I understand correctly this particular one is part of WP and not a plugin? I can't find settings for speed or anything either.

    The site is rangerfop.com.

    Thanks!

    George

There is no slider functionality in WordPress core, so this is either governed by your theme or one of your plugins.

Thanks for the reply. The depth of my ignorance is wide and deep. A closer reading of the Themes > Options > Slider Settings showed it to be jQuery slideshow (activated by choosing "yes" to Enable Slideshow. However, in Plugins, no such plugin is shown. Is there another control for it? Or is that a basic script or code embedded elsewhere?

Small words, simple concepts and I'll be touchingly grateful. Or, better yet, direct me to a good instruction resource.

    Thanks again!

It will probably be built into your theme then. Site url?

Where did you download this theme from?

I inherited this web site when the previous webmaster suddenly left. A commercial design company had set it up. I was trying to avoid asking them because they charge most every time I ask a question... .

So Themes, then, are separate from the WordPress installation? Some form of add-on? How would I find what type of Theme is installed? There's nothing obvious in Themes > Options nor when I check other likely places (like plugins).

    grazie,

    George

Try looking in Appearance -> Themes for details of your current theme. In the meantime, I'd also suggest that you have a read of Using_Themes.
