How do I add the google analytics code. The Google instructions say Copy the following code, then paste it onto every page you want to track immediately before the closing </head> tag. I don't see the </head> tag anywhere on the scrappy child css? Should I be looking somewhere else?

The best way to do this is with a plugin; there are several free ones in the repository that allow you to add your GA tracker without having to edit code.
This way if you decide to change themes, you won't need to put the same code in a new theme, too!
