   The theme only supports one menu item ("about"). I'm wondering if there is anyway to add on to that, so I can have menu links to other pages as well.

   Hmmm, yes, I've followed those directions. But nothing is added to the theme menu bar, or anywhere else.

   you're still missing one step.
   Under the "theme locations > header navigation menu > on the dropdown select: "navmenu" and save it.
