I’m using the theme Lightword that I think is very good. The problem is that it’s no longer maintained or supported.

What issues with an old template could I run into?

Did the theme author say this?

    http://wordpress.org/themes/lightword says:

This theme hasn’t been updated in over 2 years. It may no longer be maintained or supported and may have compatibility issues when used with more recent versions of WordPress.

And this theme hasn’t been upgraded since 2011.

My question was what issues I can run into if I use an old theme that hasn’t been tested on newer versions of WordPress?

Sometimes themes don’t need to be upgraded, that doesn’t mean they don’t work.

The generic issues that you can run into are PHP errors, which trip your website over and result in blank white pages. Those issues have to be resolved through FTP.

To be safe you could install WordPress locally and then install this theme.
