I would like to have the ability to theme the login and registration forms built in to the core WordPress files.

The only way to satisfactorily edit the forms now is to overwrite them with a plugin or hack them, but these options mess with other plugin functionality.

You can edit the CSS files and/or modify the wp-login.php file, without messing up with other plugins (if you are doing it right, that is).

Yes, but I want it to match my theme exactly which involves much more than changing the css and I hate to modify the core files because it makes updates difficult.

If you're up-to-date on your WordPress installation (WordPress 2.5.1), I've created a patch to allow for themed login / registration. Blog post is here (my blog uses the custom themed login patch), and a direct link to the Trac entry with the patch files is here. According to Trac, this feature is scheduled for 2.6.

Thanks for starting that Trac entry and doing the work!

It looks like that will accomplish what I'm looking for nicely, but I'll have to play with it when I get time.
