   Instead of pulling all the post when I select random, can this be filtered by a category???

   Yes. Go to
   Graphene Theme Options >> General Options >> Slider Options

   Tick the radio button next to "Show posts from categories" and then, in the menu box below, select the categories that you want to appear in the slider.

   I use this technique on my blog: blog.kjodle.net

   I believe that will show the latest post from a category. What I am looking for is random image/post from a category, we might have tweek the code....

   Random posts from specific categories option will be available in version 1.7
